Paula Creamer loves match play in the mud - Waggle Room

 

Self-styled "mudder," LPGA star Paula Creamer should feel right at home this week at the Sybase Match Play Championship in Gladstone, N.J. With never-ending rain soaking the Hamilton Farm Golf Club and forcing the cancellation of Wednesday’s pro-am, Creamer will need all her foul-weather skills to advance to the second round of the LPGA’s match play challenge.

"I am definitely a mudder," Creamer told reporters Wednesday. "I like grinding it out. I like playing when it’s cold. I like playing when it’s rainy. I think it’s fun."

Wonder how the California native will like it if the sun doesn’t make an appearance until Sunday, which is what forecasters predict? Apparently, the reigning U.S. Women’s Open champ would be fine with that.

"My dad and I when I was younger always practiced in the rain, but he made it a lot of fun for me," Creamer said. "I remember hitting out of puddles and things like that, so I still have a lot of happy memories of playing in the rain."

In fact, the 24-year-old said she actually roots for rain -- although she does draw the line at lightning. "I like it when it's hard. I like it when it's a little more difficult than the average 80-degree sunny weather," she said. "Golf's hard enough, so let's make it harder."

In case her first-round opponent, Aree Song, did not have enough to handle with the world’s No. 12, Creamer also let it be known that she favored match play, a format the pros play infrequently. She especially relished the "one-on-one" nature of the contest.

"When we play golf normally, you’re playing for four days," she said. "Right now I’m just playing for that one match and you can’t get too far ahead of yourself and  you have to be thinking about that match at that time....

"I like being able to, you know, play against someone," she added. "It’s a great way to play the game."

While Creamer claimed she was not apt to play mind games with her playing partner, she acknowledged that getting inside one’s opponent’s head was par for the course in match play.

"Definitely, there's always those little things that you can do out there. You know, you have little things about who's going to putt, that kind of stuff," she said. "Head games, some people play them, some people don’t. You just have to know your opponent....feel your way through the match.
