Canadian publishing house McClelland & Stewart has announced a new non-fiction imprint, Signal, which debuts five titles this fall.
The imprint's goal is "to publish creative, daring, and intellectually significant works of non-fiction that stir the pot," M&S president and publisher said Doug Pepper in a press release.
The fall list includes Margaret Atwood and Christopher Hitchens; future authors will include Ezra Levant and Conrad Black. An interactive companion website, SignalBooks.tv, has also been launched.
As detailed in book trade mag Quill & Quire , M&S has recently strengthened its non-fiction side: last month it hired former Key Porter publisher Jordan Fenn to head a hockey-themed imprint, and last summer retained New York editor Philip Rappaport to acquire and edit non-fiction titles.

The third annual conference of the Canadian Booksellers Association will take place May 13-15 in Toronto.
According to the U.S. trade journal Publishers Weekly , this year's theme is New Ideas in Store, emphasizing professional development for retailers. The CBA, which in recent years has focused on independent booksellers, has invited large book retailers Costco, Walmart and Indigo to send staff.
This conference was initiated after the 2009 collapse of the CBA's annual BookExpo event.
Twenty publishers have already been confirmed to participate this year, including Penguin, Random House and HarperCollins.
