Nerve-wracking trip to Bora
I decided to skip the trip through the hilly terrains of Puka beach and dined at the hotel café instead. I’m sure I made the right decision because later in the evening, I learned that commissioner Chito Salud and Willie Marcial, on their way to Puka beach, had to get down from the mini cab where they were riding, roll up their sleeves, and push the vehicle that was starting to slide down, because it had more passengers than it could carry.Where Is Bora Bora - News

Bora Bora? In the South Pacific, one of 118 islands and several atolls that make up French Polynesia. These emerald flecks are underwater volcanoes lying halfway between Australia and South America. Bora Bora belongs to the Society Islands archipelago, along with Tahiti, where the country’s capital Papeete is located.
History, people and culture
The Society Islands were probably settled around AD 800 by tribal communities. Polynesia’s prolonged – and often tormented – encounter with Europe began in the sixteenth century when Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan sighted the remote Tuamotu Islands. Dutch, English and French vessels berthed here all through the eighteenth century.
In the colonial jostle for supremacy, France prevailed, annexing the islands from 1842 onwards. Gradual concessions in response to local calls for autonomy followed in the years after 1957. Tahiti and her Islands were named an Overseas Country in 2004.
While the majority of residents are of Polynesian origin, the centuries long ethnic churning has also resulted in a sizeable number of residents with part-European or part-Asian ancestry. There is also a small European community, mainly of French descent. The official language is French, but you can get by with English in the islands frequented by travellers.
Though most Polynesians are Christians, recent years have witnessed renewed national pride in the indigenous cultural heritage Native languages, art, music, sensual dance forms like the ori Tahiti , a festive time.
To get here, take an i nternational airline out of Los Angeles to Papeete (Tahiti). From here, Air Tahiti flies you to Bora Bora’s airport, located on a “motu” or islet. A lagoon shuttle takes you to Vaitape, the main city. Most resorts send their own boats to whisk guests off to their respective “motus”.
In Bora Bora
From the moment you arrive, the beauty of French Polynesia casts a spell. Bora Bora was the first to capitalize on this magic, by building over-the-water resorts – whether you’re at a top-of-the-line resort or more modest lodgings the view of endless turquoise waters comes free. Breakfast arrives by outrigger canoe!
It’s tempting to spend an entire trip simply drinking in the pristine loveliness all around, but a leisurely look-see around Bora Bora is rewarding too. Circle Island Tours offer two ways to explore – by lagoon or the coastal road encircling the island.
