Homes for Hounds benefits underprivileged dogs

They may not be furnished with crystal chandeliers or original Van Gogh paintings, like Snoopy’s dog house, but, thanks to Homes for Hounds, some underprivileged dogs won’t have to get drenched to the bone or shiver next winter.

A few impoverished pussycats will also benefit from the community service project developed by Christin Warlop, Pittsburg State University social work senior.

The first Homes for Hounds community work day was held Saturday at Home Center Construction, Inc., with volunteers assembling sturdy, snug houses from donated materials.

“We were required to come up with a project where we made a change in the world in a positive way, and I’d been seeing a lot of dogs without houses,” Warlop said.

In fact, this had bothered her for some time.

“When I see an animal without shelter, I can’t just drive by, I’ll make a call about it,” she said. “Then this class got me going, and I contacted Leslie Harris with the Southeast Kansas Humane Society. She told me that they get more than 200 calls every year about animals who don’t have shelter.”

Supplies were obtained from local lumber yards, construction firms, etc.

“They did a great job of donating, I think almost all the lumber yards contributed materials,” said Bill Warlop.

“My original goal was 10 houses, but we’re doing 17 today,” Warlop said. “Elizabeth Kutz, who’s working with the trap, spay/neuter, release program, said there was a need for some cat houses, so we’re doing a few of those.”

“You can’t discriminate,” noted Bill Warlop, who was working on a cat house.

Materials were divided into kits for each house. A great deal of help with the planning and building strategy came from Lewis Casaletto, who owned and operated True Value Home Center for many years. He also happens to be the grandfather of Christin Warlop’s husband, Daniel.

“My grandfather actually had this same idea years ago,” said Daniel Warlop. “It’s neat that Christin had the same idea. Grandpa has done a ton of work with the kits and house bases.”

“The houses will be distributed through calls Pittsburg Animal Controls receives about animals in need of shelter, or some people just call the Humane Society directly,” Christin Warlop said.

She hopes the work day will become an annual event, but her husband thinks it could be even bigger.
